Climate action: be part of the solution against climate change

From Bankstown Greens

The Greens are committed to a jobs-rich clean energy future. We are working to:

  • Phase in world-leading energy efficiency standards for all appliances, buildings and manufacturing.
  • Establish a 20% renewable energy target by 2020.
  • Ensure big polluters pay. The atmosphere must no longer be a dumping ground for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases and there should be incentives to produce and use renewable energy rather than fossil fuels.
  • Stop the development of new coal fired power stations and coal mines, including Anvil Hill in the Upper Hunter.
  • Create opportunities for the manufacture of renewable energy and public transport technology.
  • Set and enforce progressive targets toward an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Policy Change – Not Climate Change

We can all be part of urgent action to reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. Find out more about what you can do. Go to the Greens NSW website to find out more about our campaign or to read the NSW Climate Change and Energy Policy.

Climate Action Working Group

Greens members are invited to join the Climate Action Working Group, convened by Dr John Kaye, who also organises forums which give the latest on greenhouse effect, climate change, and what individuals, councils, state and federal governments can do to preserve our climate. John is also an upper house candidate in the 2007 State Election.

For example we need to cut back on burning fossil fuels and develop alternative energy sources. This will eventually stem the trend to extreme climate events such as droughts and cyclones, which are becoming more frequent due to human pollution of the atmosphere.

Development of alternative energy sources will improve the employment situation. Such developments are much more labour intensive than sourcing energy from coal and oil.
